In Upper Normandy the Lower Pleistocene is made up of sands with pebble levels, and fersiallitic-type paleosols. The Middle Pleistocen period began with the deposit of sandy, hydromorphic loess, becoming more silty, with intervening leached, reddish soils ; the terminal beds are constituted by the Saint-Pierre-les-Elbeuf series of loess with leached brown soils. After the dating of the high alluvial level of Amiens-Montières (Ferme de Grâce) as Middle Quaternary, it seemed reasonable to attribute the gravel levels of even higher altitude, denominated here as the plateau gravels, to the Lower Quaternary.
