The growing importance of eating out - In 1980, each household spent an average of 2 600 francs on lunch or dinner outside of the domicile. The French devote a growing part of their food budgets to meals taken outside the home. From 11,5 % in 1971, this part increased to 13,7 % in 1980. It is greater for young households, as well as for single people, and, above all, for bachelors. Different categories of the population frequent unequally the diverse types of restaurants. Thus, it is the households of wage-earners, in particular young ones, which devote the largest sums to company canteens and rural households to school meals.
