Substitution and Factor Price : are the/ linked ? by Patrick Artus and Claude BISMUT The substitution of labor for capital can be analyzed using the theoretical tools of the production function and the hypothesis that firms seek the optimum. The minimization of purchase prices and of équipement operation costs are generally taken for granted. After having reviewed and discussed these concepts, the authors show that they account for the choices of production techniques and illustrate the way in which firms combine capital and labor in order to reach a production goal and to meet demand.
