The Consequences of Higher Oil Prices - In the wake of recent price increases, there is great uncertainty regarding the evolution of the cost of energy. This article tries to calculate the consequences of an increase in oil prices which would be permanently higher than the increase in the prices of manufactured goods. The simulations carried out by using the « METRIC » model lead to the following conclusions : that a serious foreign trade imbalance would result, accompanied by a slowdown of growth and increased unemployment. This imbalance could not be reduced significantly neither by lowering the exchange rate of the Franc — which would only increase the cost of imports — nor by increasing exports to the OPEC countries, which would increas...
