Poor Families in an Average-sized City - Based on existing data (the records of welfare deparments among others) this article tries to define the category referred to as « poor » families. This experimental study focuses on the case of families with children in the city of Reims having an income, not including welfare benefits, less than the minimum wage (SMIC). The main conclusions reached are that such families are often headed by a woman alone whose employment situation is precarious and whose income consists largely of family allowances and various other forms of aid.
