The evolution of employment in Common Market countries (1958-1970) by Robert SALAIS The Common Market's labor force has not increased very much since its creation : 74,1 million in 1958 and 75,6 million in 1970. Un employment however has decreased strongly : from 2,5 million to 1,3 million. Employment has' increased by 2,6 million. The main characteristic of the 1958-1970 period is the increase in the number of wage earning workers : from 48,8 million to 57,5 million. This is a consequence of a moderate increase in industrial employment (45 % of employment in 1970) and a stronger increase in service employment (43 % of employment in 1970).
