One of the outstanding characteristics of the administrative subdivisions of France is their lack of uniformity: 723 Cantons (23 %) have a population of less than 5,000, while 147 have a population of over 50,000; nearly half of the 38,000 Communes have a population under 300, totalling 5 % of the whole population of the country (a thousand communes even have a population of less than 50) whereas half the total population of France lives towns with a population of more than 10,000, i.e. 2 % only of the total number of Communes. The pattern of the subdivisions has not greatly changed since they were set up under the Revolution. Between 1962 and 1968, 256 Communes ceased to exist as a result of mergers.
