National audienceNumerous investigations have shown the presence of mitochondrial dysfunction in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). While mitochondrial oxidation pathways are increased during simple steatosis, these adaptations wane during nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The degradation of mitochondrial functions then continues during cirrhosis. These mitochondrial dysfunctions seem to be, at least in part, the consequence of inflammation. Patients with NAFLD should be discouraged from consuming alcohol, a molecule with many deleterious effects on mitochondria.De nombreuses investigations ont mis en évidence la présence de dysfonctions mitochondriales au cours de la stéatose hépatique non alcoolique (NAFLD).
