The health of mountain freshwater ecosystems, and the ecosystem services they provide, are threatened by global change impacts on mountain climate and hydrology. The disease chytridiomycosis, caused by the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), has been causing epidemics of amphibian populations globally, with hotspots of severe mortality events in mountain areas. Emerging disease in freshwater species, such as caused by fungal pathogens, is seen as evidence of profound alterations in freshwater ecosystem functioning and ecosystem integrity.
