The detailed pedological study of the country of Lunel-Sommières (Hérault) has shown the existence of a calcareous gravel altered by a very leached red soil (or fersialhtic soil). This gravel is post-miocene and anterior to rhodanian fluvial pebble considered as villafranchian. It should been laid down (during Villafranchian period ?) by an old Vidourle of wich alimentation was already partly cevenole. This paleosoil over spreads some tops and slopes : it exibits the alteration in place of a dozen metres of calcareous gravel and should date from old Quaternary. This paleosoil subsists owing to his upper stony horizon and the absence of backland and shows the significance of parent material as factor of pedogenesis and possibly of morphogene...
