Oscillations du niveau marin et changements climatique dans la Pampa Deprimida (Pampa argentine)

The paper is based upon systematic field study and photo-interpretation and presents a new sratigraphic interpretation of the Quaternary deposits of the Pampa Deprimida which is correlated with climatic changes and glaao-eustatic variations of sea-level. The Pampean formation is considered as Old-Quaternary and consists of volcanic ashes, not of lœss. The Post-Pampean period does not restrict itself to the Holocene, as J. Frenguelli thought, but beguins about with the end of the Mindel period. Two marine transgressions have been put into evidence, which have reached the levels of 8-10 m and 4-5 m above present sea-level. There is a regression between them. After the second high stand of the sea, called Platean, occurs the pre-flandnan regression, followed by the flandrian transgression, which has reached an altitude of + 1-1,5 m. During the high stands of sea-level, the climate was wet, as now at least. Small alluvial deposits were laid along the rivers and, at least during the Platean, brunizem soils with a strong textural B horizon were formed. They have been widely preserved, generally truncated. During the low sea level stages, the climate turned dry, with a more severe conditions during the pre-Platean regression (lœss deposits, dune fields). The winds which have sculptured the landscape came from the SW & the WSW, probably from a high pressure area formed upon the ice cap of the Southern Andes.L'article, fondé sur des observations nombreuses sur le terrain et une utilisation systématique des photographies aériennes, propose une nouvelle interprétation stratigraphique du Quaternaire de la Pampa Deprimida et met en rapport oscillations glacio-eustatiques du niveau marin et changements climatiques. Le Pampéen est rapporté au Quaternaire ancien et formé de cinérites (et non de lœss). Le Post-Pampéen ne se limite pas à l'Holocène, comme le pensait J. Frenguelli, mais commence vers le Mindel. On y met en évidence deux transgressions ayant atteint les côtes de 8-10 m et de 4-5 m, avec une régression intermédiaire. Après la dernière période de haut niveau marin (Platéen), se place la régression préflandrienne, puis la transgression flandrienne qui se termine par un Dunkerquien fort net, vers la cote 1-1,5 m. Des climats humides ont régné lors des hauts niveaux marins, avec mise en place de petites nappes alluviales et, au Platéen, formation de sols bruns à fort horizon B textural, largement conservés, quoique tronqués. Les périodes de régression, au contraire, ont connu des climats secs, surtout la plus ancienne, avant le Platéen (mise en place de lœss, façonnement de dunes). Les vents efficaces venaient de l'WSW et du SW, probablement de hautes pressions liées à la calotte glaciaire des Andes méridionales.Tricart Jean.
