Summary. — The genealogical relationships within the village of Arthez d'Asson (Beam, French western Pyrenees) were reconstructed from 1744 to 1975, allowing the study of mate choice and its evolution according to their birth rank, their occupational activity (farming or not) and the rules of heritage. In Beam, it was customary for the eldest child, male or female, to be the sole heir and that heirs had to marry preferentially someone who was not first-bom. These customs do not hold out against statistical analysis.
