Summary. — The opposition between «Nature» and «Nurture» is still today central to innumerable controversies. It emerged in England in the 1870's in the work of F. Galton. The distinction he suggested, between heredity and environment, played a key role in the emergence of the modern theory of heredity. For the first time heredity and the acquired emerged as two independent domains of causality formed on distinct substances and processes. The inherent bias of a long questionnarie that Galton sent to the most eminent representatives of English science throws light on the genesis of this distinction. This questionnarie was drawn up in response to the objections of Alphonse de Candolle who argued for a large mesure of environmental influence in the make up of scientists. Galton, on the other hand, committed to his eugenic theory, believed in the essentially hereditary nature of intellectual skills and their variations. Study of Galton's questions as well as the use he made of them reveal that fundamentally, nurture is opposed to nature in the same way as the voluntary to the involuntary, personal responsability to irresponsability. This consideration of the common sense of Victorian England took, through Galton's work, a scientific form which was to prepare the way for the acceptance of the ideas of Weismann on the absence of any transmission of acquired caracteristics, and the strict distinction between hereditary determinants and individual ontogenesis.Résumé. — L'opposition entre inné et acquis structure encore actuellement de nombreuses controverses. Elle a été constituée en Angleterre par Francis Galton dans les années 1870. La distinction qu'il proposait, entre «Nature» et «Nurture», entre hérédité et environnement, a joué un rôle important dans la constitution de la théorie moderne de l'hérédité. Pour la première fois, hérédité et acquis apparaissaient comme deux domaines de causalité indépendants renvoyant à des supports et des processus distincts. Les biais d'un long questionnaire que Galton envoya aux membres les plus éminents de la science anglaise permet d'éclairer la genèse de cette distinction. Ce questionnaire fut réalisé pour répondre aux objections d'Alphonse de Candolle qui défendait une influence importante de l'environnement dans la formation des scientifiques. Galton, au contraire, fermement engagé dans son programme eugéniste, croyait à la nature essentiellement héréditaire des talents intellectuels et de leurs variations. L'analyse des questions proposées par Galton ainsi que de l'exploitation qu'il en donna révèle qu'à l'origine l'acquis s'oppose à l'inné comme le volontaire à l'involontaire, la responsabilité personnelle à l'irresponsabilité. Cette considération du sens commun de l'Angleterre victorienne prenait, à travers les travaux de Galton, une forme scientifique qui allait préparer l'acceptation des thèses de Weismann sur l'absence de toute transmission des caractères acquis et la distinction stricte entre déterminants héréditaires et ontogenèse individuelle.Lenay Charles.
