Summary. — The opposition between «Nature» and «Nurture» is still today central to innumerable controversies. It emerged in England in the 1870's in the work of F. Galton. The distinction he suggested, between heredity and environment, played a key role in the emergence of the modern theory of heredity. For the first time heredity and the acquired emerged as two independent domains of causality formed on distinct substances and processes.
