ORIGIN AND EVOLUTION OF HUMAN MITOCHONDRIAL DNA : THE LOST PARADIGM Summary. — The underlying difficulties of human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) studies are examined. It is found that mtDNA may no longer be considered as a simple genetic system. The strong hypotheses concerning an African origin of modern humans do not seem to hold as differenial evolution of mtDNA is observed among some populations. Taking into account this phenomenon, which still needs to be characterized, the observed distribution of mtDNA polymorphism leads to alternative interpretations of the differentiation processes undergone by this molecule.Résumé. — Les difficultés inhérentes à l'étude du polymorphisme de l'ADN mitochon- drial (ADNmt) humain sont passées en revue.
