Les Ammassalimiut émigrés au Scoresbysund. Étude démographique et socio-économique de leur adaptation (Côte orientale du Groenland 1968)

Summary : In this study the author analyzes the evolutionary changes affecting a small Eskimo group which occurred with extreme rapidity due to recent contact with Western culture. The prehistory and history of this population are known: nearly total isolation of the inhabitants of the eastern coast of Greenland until 1884; discovery of the Ammassalik population in 1884 by a Dane, G. Holm; slow colonization and evangelization commencing at the end of the last century; further, emigration in 1925 of some Ammassalik families to 1 000 km North into the mouth of the immense fjord of Scorresbysund (70° N Lat.). The subject of the study presented is, on the one hand, the history of the establishment of 70 Ammassalimiut emigrants in their new surroundings in 1925, their reunion at a later date with other families also of Ammassalik origin, except- ing one family from he western coast; and, on the other hand, the measure of their acculturation in 1968, over forty years after separation from their original habitat. Access to Scoresbysund is very difficult due to geographic and climatic factors; contacts with the exterior are rare. Nevertheless, the Eskimo families who setled there, formerly relying on a hunting subsistence, have rapidly lost their own traditional culture. Tools and techniques of the hunt, clothing, housing, leisure activities, language, religion, etc., no longer remind one of the original Ammas- salik culture. The causes of such changes date back to the creation of the migrant community in Scoresbysund which suddenly placed the Ammassalimiut founders under the influence, in part, of the Europeans who had established the colony, and, in part, of the West Greelanders who had been entrusted with education, religious instruction, and establishment of trade. In the first section, the author analyzes demographic data pertaining to this population, from 1925 to December 31, 1967 at which time she completed a household census of the 410 Ammassalimiut inhabitants. Genealogies for all the families have been established. Each individual of this population is thus defined by his pedigree and characterized by his dates of birth and death, his successive marriages, and his progeny. Growth rate, changes in age and sex structure, increasing hybridization, fluctuations in the death rate, an increasing fertility rate, etc., give an overview of the diachronic development of this small group for over four decades. In addition, the December 31, 1967 cross-section provides a synchronie description of the population. The other section is concerned with a socioeconomic study. This community obtains a large portion of its food and part of its cash income from environmental sources (hunting sea mammals, fishing, and gathering). Nevertheless, a detailed analysis of masculine activities (by age group) shows that only the oldest men continue to subsist by hunting and, in contrast, young men less than thirty years of age seek salaried employment. Their lack of qualification only permits them, however, to have access to menial tasks, which are rare; those men who do gain employment show considerable instability. The introduction of Western culture into this Eskimo community has marked the end of a self-subsistent economy where an equilibrium between men and natural resources was strictly maintained. At present, the importance of Danish assistance, has become such that the future of the Scoresbysund inhabitants poses a serious problem.Résumé: Dans cette étude, l'auteur analyse l'évolution très rapide connue par un petit groupe eskimo entré récemment en contact avec la culture occidentale. La préhistoire et l'histoire de cette population sont connues : isolement presque total des habitants de la côte orientale du Groenland jusqu'en 1884, découverte de la population d'Ammassalik en 1884 par un Danois, G. Holm ; colonisation lente et evangelisation à partir de la fin du siècle dernier, puis émigration en 1925 de quelques familles d'Ammassalik à 1 000 kilomètres au Nord : à l'embouchure de l'immense fjord du Scoresbysund (70° de latitude Nord). Le thème de la présente étude est d'une part l'histoire de l'implantation dans leur nouvel habitat des soixante-dix Ammassalimiut émigrés en 1925, rejoints plus tard par d'autres familles également originaires d'Ammassalik, exceptée une famille venue de la côte ouest, d'autre part la mesure de leur acculturation en 1968, plus de quarante ans après la séparation de leur milieu d'origine. Le Scoresbysund est une région très difficile d'accès pour des raisons géographiques et climatiques ; les contacts avec l'extérieur sont rares, toutefois les familles de chasseurs eskimo qui s'y sont installées ont très rapidement perdu leur culture traditionnelle propre. Techniques et instruments de chasse, vêtements, habitat, loisirs, langue, religion, etc.. ne rappellent plus la culture originale d'Ammassalik. Les causes de tels changements remontent à la création de la colonie du Scoresbysund qui mit immédiatement les fondateurs ammassalimiut sous l'influence, d'une part des Européens qui avaient installé la colonie, d'autre part des Ouest-groenlandais qui avaient la charge de l'enseignement scolaire et religieux et du commerce. Dans une première partie, l'auteur analyse les données démographiques concernant cette population, depuis 1925 jusqu'à la liste nominative de quatre cent dix individus effectuée par lui-même au 31 décembre 1967. Les généalogies de toutes les familles ont pu être établies. Chaque individu se trouve ainsi défini par ses dates de naissance et de mort, sa filiation, ses unions successives et sa descendance. Taux de croissance, changements de la structure par âge et par sexe, métissage progressif, évolution de la mortalité, accroissement du taux de fécondité des femmes, etc.. donnent un aperçu du développement de ce petit groupe pendant quatre décennies et une coupe dans le temps (le 31 décembre 1967) apporte la description de la population à un moment précis. L'autre partie est consacrée à l'étude socio-économique de cette société. Cette dernière tire encore très largement sa nourriture et une partie de ses revenus du milieu naturel (chasse aux mammifères marins, pêche et cueillette), toutefois une analyse détaillée des activités masculines par groupes d'âge montre que seuls les hommes les plus âgés continuent à vivre de la chasse et qu'au contraire les jeunes de moins de 30 ans recherchent des emplois salariés. Leur manque de qualification ne leur permet cependant d'accéder qu'à quelques rares travaux subalternes où ils se montrent très instables. L'introduction de la civilisation occidentale dans cette société eskimo a marqué la fin d'une économie d'auto-subsistance où un équilibre entre les hommes et les ressources était strictement maintenu.
