This dissertation is situated at the crossroads of three research fields – deafness, disability and childhood. It proposes a contribution to a sociology of the deaf childhood world, based on multi-sited survey and giving the floor to its different actors, involved on an existential basis (child and his family) or professional basis (different professionals of deafness). The reading of the evolution of the category of deaf children from the 18th century highlights the different socio-historical figures from which the tensions, which persist in the deaf childhood world today, are inherited.
