International audienceThe traditional picture of the animal economy in medieval Provence is one usually characterised by caprine and, in particular, sheep. Throughout the Middle Ages, this species dominated almost all faunal assemblages from urban contexts. However, recent advances in the study of rural contexts reveal a little-known facet of Provençal diets that leads us to question the “hegemony” of sheep in contexts prior to the 13th century. On the aristocratic sites of Notre-Dame and La Moutte in Allemagne-en-Provence, as well as at La Roca of Niozelles (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence), occupied between the end of the 10th and the 12th centuries, the meat diet is essentially focused on pork.
