The goal of this thesis was to explore the form, construction, and use, of Senegambian watercraft, with a particular focus on neglected Gambian watercraft in the context of the Gambian maritime cultural landscape. This was done through the synthesis of large amount of data primarily consisting of textual evidence including historical accounts and modern studies, and pictographic evidence such as illustrations and photographs. The period covered in this thesis spanned from the mid fifteenth century to the mid twentieth century. Prior to this thesis there was no comprehensive study of Senegambian watercraft through history.
