SUMMARY. — The aim of this paper is to analyze, from both epistemological and historical view points, some aspects of the figure in the mathematics of Leibniz that he called « symbolic thought » and considered as a main part of his system of the world. We shall therefore examine the representations offered by Leibniz for some mathematical concepts that were completely new at the time and arose with him, in connection with the development of symbolic notation. The symbolic representation given by Leibniz to various concepts, such as elimination, position or situs, operational exhaustivity, recognition of patterns, repetition, « link », absence (of a letter or a predicate), will be described. Finally, we shall show, on the basis of some examp...
