L'intégration des équations aux dérivées partielles linéaires à coefficients constants dans les travaux de Cauchy (1821-1830)

SUMMARY. — Since his work on the theory of waves (1815) Cauchy faced the problem of integrating certain partial differential equations, namely constant coefficient linear ones, belonging to mathematical physics. The aim of this article is to follow up this theme in his subsequent work during the 1821-1830 period, by considering in particular the following aspects: the systematic use of the Fourier transform written with the help of an imaginary variable, the enhanced algebraization of symbolic calculus, the employment of residual calculus. With the help of these techniques Cauchy arrives at a sixfold integral, a solution to the "Cauchy problem" under consideration. We mention how as early as 1829, in view of applications in optics, Cauchy seeks to reduce this integral; however, to reduce the general integral of equations relating to the vibration of punctiform ether will be the aim of a genuine research program in the 1840s, which I will not examine here.RÉSUMÉ. — Depuis ses travaux sur la théorie des ondes (1815), Cauchy est confronté au problème de l'intégration de certaines équations aux dérivées partielles, linéaires à coefficients constants, de la physique mathématique. Cet article se propose de suivre ce thème dans les travaux ultérieurs de la période 1821-1830 en examinant particulièrement les aspects suivants : l'utilisation systématique de la transformée de Fourier écrite à l'aide de la variable imaginaire, l'algébrisation poussée du calcul symbolique, l'intervention du calcul des résidus. A l'aide de ces techniques, Cauchy aboutit à une intégrale sextuple, solution du « problème de Cauchy » considéré. Nous mentionnons comment, dès 1829, pour des applications à l'optique, Cauchy cherche à réduire cette intégrale ; mais en fait, la réduction de l'intégrale générale des équations de vibration de l'éther ponctiforme va faire l'objet d'un véritable programme de recherche dans les années 1840, que nous n'étudions pas ici.Dahan Damedico Amy.
