SUMMARY. — The aim of this paper is to point out the significative importance of the astronomical and geodesical observations made during the first half of the eighteenth century, observations directed to solve the polemic question of the earth shape. After analizing the terms of the debate, clearly results the theorical and experimental incertitude experimented by the scientists as a consequence of the date obtained from the expeditions to France, Lapland and Quito. The impossibility of obtaining a satisfactory value for the polar flattening impeled the scientists to design a kind of geodesic experiment, and this fact was at the origin of a new scientific discipline, geodesy.RÉSUMÉ. — L'objet de cet article est de mettre en relief la signi...
