Abstract

SUMMARY. — The Parisian chemist B.-G. Sage (1740-1824), a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Paris, was considered somewhat of a celebrity before 1785, mainly due to his work in inorganic chemistry. An adept without reservation of the Theory of Phlogistons, Sage was one of its last unconditional French supporters. This earned him the « new » chemists' hostility — those who belonged to the Lavoisier group — and then, after 1787, his name sank in to oblivion. He founded the first Ecole des Mines at the Monnaie de Paris in 1783. The scientists J.A. Chaptal and Romé de L'Isle were among his students at the Ecole des Mines.RÉSUMÉ. — B.-G.
