Frontières géographiques et barrières sociales dans les quartiers de banlieue / Geographical frontiers and social barriers in French urban ghettos

In France, between the poor neighbourhoods of the banlieue and the rest of the city the gap has widened, the bridges have broken down, testifying to the failure of the integration process. For a decade, a part of the youths of the banlieues have strategically internalized and radicalized this gap-distance turning out the exclusion into provocation: grownups and even children gangs of the peripheries make occasional moves into the city centres or lie ambush within their remote territories. Are they for ever stuck in this restrictive representation of two antagonistic worlds? Will they be able to escape the identification to the primary group, to the ghetto, to the deeply rooted feeling of social determinism? Based on a hundred of interviews with former residents of the banlieue housing projects ofthe 70's and the 80's, this article shows what must be learned and taught to today's youths from their older brothers' experiences, which enabled them to make it and melt into the mainstream of French society. The ladder have once learned how to overcome their mental barriers, to bypass their limits, to take the risk of meeting with the others and eventually to deal with the requirements of the so-called French model of integration. They have built in their personal land-marks, and have invented their own space and individuality.Le fossé s'est creusé entre les quartiers sensibles de banlieue et la ville, les ponts se sont rompus, il n'y a plus de relais d'intégration. De cette distance, qu'ils ont parfaitement intégrée et radicalisée en transformant l'exclusion en provocation, joue une frange des jeunes des banlieues : gamins et adolescents descendent en bande en ville, ou se retranchent en embuscade sur leur territoire. Seront-ils toujours enfermés dans cette représentation réductrice de deux mondes antagonistes? Sauront-ils échapper à cette identification au groupe, à la cité, à ce sentiment enraciné d'un destin tout tracé ? Cet article, basé sur une série d'entretiens menés auprès de la génération de «grands frères» des années 70 et 80, montre ce qui doit être retenu et transmis à ces jeunes des expériences de leurs aînés, ces Français de banlieue qui ont réussi et se sont fondus dans la masse des «Français moyens». Un jour, ils ont dépassé leur barrière mentale, ils se sont lancés et risqués à la confrontation, avec les autres, avec eux-mêmes. Ils ont appris à composer avec les exigences de l'esprit d'intégration et avec l'individualisme: ils ont «dérouillé».Begag Azouz.
