The island of La Réunion comprises two different geographical areas : inhabited and developed lower slopes and coasts, and protected upper slopes controlled by the Office National des Forêts (National Forestry Office). The latter are devoted to forestry that concerns two species, Acacia heterophylla, Cryptomeria japonica. Several types of pickings are also common. Preventive policies based upon education, environment regulations, erosion and pollution control, aim to guarantee the conservation of the ecosystems. New footpaths opened these areas to varions sportive and touristic practices that lead to the discovery of natural beauties, especially biogeographical and volcanic landscapes.
