A coastal climate, which exists at a local scale, has been identified and set apart from the maritime climate (regional scale) through the study of precipitation and temperature data in Europe. The maritime climate concerns a continental fringe about 50 km from the coast to the interior, whereas the coastal climate is confined to the coastal border. The maritime climate is less rainy in summer than the interior climate, but this summer rainfall decrease is more pronounced near the coast.
