Des études récentes ont démontré que le latin écrit de l'époque mérovingienne était lu et parlé de manière à être compris par la population analphabète. Parmi les médiévistes, il est désormais admis que les documents des VIIe et VIIIe siècles en Gaule reflètent un registre formel de la langue parlée. Ceci est particulièrement conséquent pour l'étude de l'apocope et de la syncope des voyelles par lesquelles la plupart des voyelles non accentuées du latin classique ont disparu de l’ancien français, soit décrites comme une perte directe de la voyelle (V → ∅), soit avec une réduction préalable en cheva (V → ə → ∅).
