Le frottement dans les moteurs thermiques et hybrides est responsable d'un quart des émissions de CO2 d'un véhicule particulier. La réduction de ces frictions représente donc, dans une logique de développement durable, un enjeu majeur afin de diminuer les gaz à effet de serre et la consommation des véhicules. Dans la partie basse du moteur, les paliers de vilebrequins fonctionnent en régime hydrodynamique, régime de lubrification piloté en grande partie par les propriétés visqueuses des fluides.
