Augustus and the Divine in the Work of Ovid : A Representation of the Principate, between Poetry, Theology and Politics

En 27 avant notre ère, Rome inaugure officiellement le Principat, symbole du retour à une paix qui lui avait manqué depuis plus de cinquante ans, avec le début des premières guerres civiles. Sa stabilité reposait en grande partie sur un discours religieux faisant de celui qu’on nommait désormais Augustus un élu des dieux, appelé à rejoindre les divinités officielles de la Ville en tant que cognatus deorum. Ovide, poète de la « deuxième génération », fut le seul de ceux que l’on appelle communément les « poètes augustéens » à vivre et à représenter ce lent processus jusqu’à sa fin. En rétablissant le dialogue entre des œuvres produites sur un temps long (plus de quarante ans), nous entendons montrer les évolutions, mais aussi la cohérence d’une production dont la réflexion se construisit en regard de l’auto-représentation du Prince et de son régime. En reconnectant analyses littéraire et politique, la thèse souhaite apporter un éclairage plus nuancé sur la réflexion d’un poète trop souvent perçu comme un révolutionnaire et un opposant radical au Principat d’Auguste.In 27 BC, Rome officially inaugurated the Roman Principate, a symbol of the return to an era of peace that had been missing for more than fifty years, with the beginning of the first civil wars. Its stability was largely based upon a religious discourse that equated he who was henceforward called Augustus with one elected by the gods, meant to join the official divinities of the Town as cognatus deorum. Ovid, a « second generation » poet, was the only one among those commonly called the « Augustean poets » to live through this slow process and exemplify it till its end. By restoring the link between works written over a long period of time(more than fourty years), we mean to show the evolutions, but also the consistency of a series of writings that had been elaborated in connection with the self-portraiture of the Prince and his regime. By reconnecting litterary analyses and political ones, this thesis aims at introducing a more nuanced approach to a poet too often perceived as a revolutionary and a radical opponent of the Principate of Augustus
