Abstract : Mountain research, a developing country perspective. This article presents the point of view of an Indian research worker concerned by the potential harmful effects of outside intervention on mountain environments and social systems. He underlines the impact of analyses based on an «exogenous» point of view which incorporate both scientific and political viewpoints and* which consequently do not adequately take into account the opinions, initiatives and knowledge of local populations. The author recommends that greater importance be given to studying traditional «ecological» knowledge and that such knowledge be better used in preparing ecological analyses of the way mountain environments are evolving.
