Finland is the most northern country in the world after Iceland, since one third of its territory lies north of the polar circle. However, in spite of bad physical conditions, it has almost achieved self-sufficiency in farm products. But the physical restraints are lighter than at the same latitudes elsewhere in the northem hemisphere. The main feature of Finnish farming, besides the lack of variety of its products, lies in the high number of small self-owned farms. The average farm has 11 ha of cropland but has also 35 ha of woodland. Thus in 1969 in Finland the farms in the 2-10 ha bracket covered 66 % of all improved lands (49 % in Sweden), those over 20 ha 8% only (26% in Sweden).
