The Aubrac glacier (Massif Central). The glacial formations of the Aubrac Mountains were discovered by G. Fabre in 1873. They cover an area 24 kilometres broad and 31 kilometres long, arranged in parallel formation with a maximum altitude of 1 471 metres. A morphological study employing aerial photographs supplied by the I.G.N. and a sedimentalogical study of the deposits produced the following results : 1) Confirmation of the existence of three principal phases. 2) Successive glaciers have taken the form of an ice-cap. The principal difference lies in the emission of glacial tongues in the valleys and piedmont lobes during the last two phases. 3) The notion of « valley glaciers » is, therefore, becoming less tenable.
