La structure urbaine de Caracas

The structure of Caracas. - Abstract. - The article is a study of the structure of Caracas, a town which could be described as an incoherent union of homogeneous elements. Until the 1920s the development of the town was slow and irregular. This fact can be explained in terms of natural disasters, such as the earthquake of 1812, in terms of the war of independence, and finally, in that of civil disorder. Starting in the 1930s the huge increase in oil production and the new policy of centralisation brought about an extremely rapid growth of the city. Since then two types of development can be distinguished in Caracas. Firstly coalescence, then, after the construction of urban thoroughfares, ribbon development. The second part of the article is an attempt to classify according to type the two basic elements of the urban pattern: the buildings and the districts. The third illustrates how those elements are grouped: in space, around a large commercial axis, and in time as the consequence of developments in transport. The author has undertaken the interpretation of aerial photographs, some of which date back to 1936, which enables him to estimate and map the flow of traffic and the changes which have taken place in the townscape.La structure urbaine de Caracas - Résumé. - L'article étudie la structure de Caracas, ville que l'on peut définir comme une réunion incohérente d'éléments homogènes. La ville a connu jusqu' aux années 1920 un développement lent et irrégulier qu'expliquent certaines catastrophes naturelles, comme le tremblement de terre de 1812, la guerre d'Indépendance, puis les troubles civils. A partir des années 1930, le grand essor de la production pétrolière et la centralisation politique nouvelle ont provoqué une crois sance extrêmement rapide de la ville. Caracas connut alors deux types de développement: par coalescence, puis, après la construction d'autoroutes urbaines, par grand axe. La seconde partie de article essaie de classer par types les deux éléments de base du tissu urbain: les constructions et les quartiers. La troisième montre comment ces éléments se groupent, dans l'espace autour un grand axe central, dans le temps grâce aux transports. L'auteur s'est attaché à l'interprétation de photos aériennes, dont certaines remontent jusqu'à 1936 et qui permettent d'estimer et de cartographier les flux automobiles et les transformations du paysage urbain.Marchand Bernard.
