The Aymara conception of illness and its causes.The authors have studied traditional medical practices during visits to Indian communities in the Andes under the auspices of an international campaign to prevent infectious illness among children. The examination of a healer's writings has permitted the authors to discuss Aymara nosology which is based on traditional medical concepts still used by andean healers and shamans. The effectiveness of magical cures, indisputable when applied to psychosomatical illness, can be partially analyzed in the light of recent discoveries in psychoneuroimmunology.
