Abstract. — The strategies developed in the last 20 years in the planning of the Grenoble region have failed to control the process of peri-urban expansion. The urban area has continued to widen its zone of economic attraction with the result that the proposed relay area in the north of the region has been unable to assert itself However the double pheno- menon of domination and urban dilution has been curbed by the new era economic of crisis which has effectively limited the expansion of the residential area. Moreover, the rural communities are becoming organised and asserting themselves as small homogeneous territorial units each centred on a common kermal.
