Can one infer the existence of worker "racism" from the rise of the working-class vote in favour of the National Front? This article is based on a long survey in : the field carried out among workers- in a long-standing industrial region of France. It seeks to analyse the various types of relationships between French and immigrant workers in the factory and in the neighbourhood. Based on interviews and observations, the authors try to show that racist attitudes within working-class populations - it is - their specific -feature - are profoundly rooted, in the material living conditions, both at the factory (exacerbated competitive struggles within workshops employing unskilled workers in a content of « mass vulnerability») and in council ; housing neighbourhoods. Their analysis leads to the conclusion . that the question of worker racism cannot be dealt with as an autonomous phenomenon. Loin d'autonomiser la. question; du « racisme », les auteurs cherchent à montrer, matériel de terrain à l'appui, que les attitudes racistes en milieu populaire sont profondément enracinées dans les conditions matérielles d'existence, à l'usine (exacerbation des luttes de concurrence dans les ateliers d'OS dans un contexte de «vulnérabilité de masse») comme dans les quartiers ouvriers.
