The St Brice’s Day massacre in 1002 belongs to these little known events of the end of the Early Middle Ages. Mentioned in few Anglo-Saxon sources contemporary of the event, it is reused, deformed and amplified as soon as the second half of the eleventh century by suc-cessive writers, eager to tarnish the reputation of the Anglo-Saxon king Ethelred II by build-ing more and more dramatic representations of the facts, sometimes violent, sometimes in-cluding characters whose historicity is matter of debate.
