A large number of aquifers exhibit groundwater levels (GWL) with significant interannual to decadal (i.e. low frequency) variations. Low-frequency variations are generally responsible for the succession of wet years (high GWL) and dry years (low GWL) that can be observed in many aquifers. They do not only affect GWL, but also all hydroclimatic variables (precipitation, temperature, streamflow, evapotranspiration), since they are linked to the climate natural variability. Using a database of boreholes scarcely influenced by direct pumping, this thesis aims to study the low-frequency variability (LFV) of GWL, its influence on GWL trends and extremes in metropolitan France, and its link with the large-scale climate patterns.According to the re...
