Abstract No comprehensive survey of English landownership was undertaken until the 1880s, and much work still needs to be done from deeds and other sources to assess the pattern of ownership in earlier periods. However, it is possible to outline the basic trends in property ownership during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Greater landowners used legal mechanisms to keep their estates together, while businessmen sought to buy property for its social status. In these circumstances it was the smaller owners who were most likely to be found selling their land.
