Abstract Founded in 1836, the firm of Schneider et Cie is famed mainly for its iron and steel works activity. However, as early as 1839, it was evincing interest iron construction, in which field it made its mark as one of the leading French manufacturers. The great depression, in the 1880s and 1890s, acted as an incentive to diversify into large concrete masonery structures, resulting in the setting up, in 1895, of a civil engineering facility, elevated in 1906 to the status of corporate civil engineering department. Led by first-rate engineers, Maurice Michel-Schmidt, Charles Laroche and Victor Benezit, this department underwent considerable expansion in the interwar years.
