Pozadina istraživanja: Metabolički modulator trimetazidin (TMZ) je antianginalni lijek koji se koristi u liječenju stabilne bolesti koronarnih arterija (engl. coronary artery disease, CAD). Prema pretpostavljenom mehanizmu djelovanja lijeka, povoljan klinički učinak se ostvaruje izmjenom srčanog metabolizma: preusmjeravanjem mitohondrijskog iskorištavanja supstrata ka većem korištenju ugljikohidrata, zbog čega se povećava učinkovitost proizvodnje ATP-a. Nekoliko nedavno objavljenih studija provedenih uglavnom na životinjskim modelima su preispitale točnost predloženog mehanizma djelovanja lijeka.
