In this thesis two topics of the beam theory are considered. The rst of them is concerned with the linear Timoshenko beam theory and within it a new interpolation called the linked interpolation has been proposed. This interpolation is derived from the exact solutions of the Timoshenko beam dierential equations and therefore results in the nite element giving the exact solutions in linear analysis. The second topic is concerned with the non{linear geometrically exact beam theory of Reissner and Simo. Within this theory another interpolation is proposed; the non{linear conguration{ dependent interpolation.
