An Overview of Teacher Schools in the Last Period of the Ottoman State Osmanlı Devleti Son Dönemi Öğretmen Okullarına Bir Bakış

Maarif-i Salname-i Nezaret-i Umumiye (Education Yearbook) is one of the most important sources recorded by the state, which includes the education and training activities of the last period of the Ottoman Empire. There is a lot of information about education in the Education Yearbook dated 1316 (1899-1900 AD), which is the first of the yearbooks published during the reign of Abdulhamid 2. One of the detailed information is teacher training schools. The study was created by using document scanning, one of the descriptive analysis methods. Since the yearbook was written in Ottoman Turkish, the relevant sections were transferred to today’s Turkish. As a result of this evaluation, the situation of teacher training schools in twenty-six provinces and six sanjaks that formed the borders of the Ottoman State of that period was determined. In order to enter these three-degree schools, candidates who pass the oral and written exams are required to know Turkish well, be healthy and have good morals. There are differences in the course programs teacher training schools for male and teacher training schools for famele. It has been determined that the courses in the curriculum of Teacher Training Schools for famele are dominated by art branches such as painting, music and hand skills. It is important to complete the training of existing teachers on the new method of teaching. It has been determined that the merits of the teachers working in the schools are given importance and the number of students varies according to the regions
