The propagation of sub-picosecond pulses from high-energy lasers in passive optical fibers might trigger a unique propagation regime known as the "solitonic regime". This particular regime, emanating from the interaction between self-phase modulation and chromatic dispersion, makes it possible to produce fundamental solitons of few tens of femtoseconds by the multi-soliton fission of the source pulse. The wide spectrum of fundamental solitons allows them to undergo intra-pulse Raman scattering, which results in a self-frequency shift of the pulse towards longer wavelengths during its propagation in the optical fiber.
