Aromatic oligoamide foldamers are artificial oligomers capable of adopting well-defined folded conformations such as helices or sheets, in solution and in the crystalline state, based on the establishment of non-covalent and reversible interactions. The self-assembly of a helical structure around a dumbbell-shaped molecular axle, via a dynamic mechanism of unfolding then refolding of the helix around the axle, leads to a supramolecular architecture called foldaxane.
