Many efforts and tremendous progress has been made in recent years by low- and middle-income countries towards universal health coverage. It is achieved when all individuals have access to quality health care when they need it, without incurring financial hardship. This thesis aims to measure the progress made by low- and middle-income countries in universal health coverage, deduce their determinants, and highlight the effects of universal health coverage on health outcomes. The thesis is organized around three chapters. The first chapter shows the effect of out-of-pocket expenditures on poverty.
