This work involves the design and investigation of photoswitchable molecular materials containing dithienylethene photochromic units for optoelectronic applications. The first part focuses on the synthesis and characterization of new photochromic materials based on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. In this work, a series of photochromic phenanthrene derivatives containing pyridine or pyridinium units were synthesized and fully characterized. Two dithienylphenanthrene derivatives functionalized with pyridine units were studied in solution and exhibit similar photoswitching properties with a different thermal reactivity of their closed isomer.
