This PhD thesis deals with the optimal design of translational parallel robots. Both aspects of mechanisms synthesis are introduced: typological synthesis and dimensional synthesis. The first part of this document deals with the dimensional synthesis of four different types of translational parallel robots, Delta, 3-UPU, Tri-Pyramid and RAF, for the same prescribed workspace. The obtained results yield a number of optimal solutions for each robot in terms of compactness and dexterity; however, this procedure does not allow an easy selection of a unique optimal robot for the given task.
