This article traces the development of labour migration from the Bassari village of Etyolo in Senegal-Oriental. Three main migration phases are noted and discussed : (1) early movements centering around forced labour and small commerce ; (2) the rapid expansion of seasonal migration to include practically all young men and women ; and (3) the recent appearance of long-term settlement in towns. The reasons for changes in migration patterns appear to be a response to changing external conditions in Senegal and surrounding countries. The effects of migration on village socio-economic structures, however, seems to have been mainly conditioned by internal, village-based, factors.
