The Debate over "Fraudulent Recognitions" and the Construction of the Imperial Legal Space Emmanuelle Saada From the beginning of the twentieth century on, administrators and jurists in Indochina and other French colonial territories denounced the phenomenon of "fraudulent recognition". This was the practice by which French men recognized children who were not their own, in order to permit them to acquire French citizenship and escape their fate as indigenous subjects. In order to combat this form of "citizenship fraud", and after a lengthy legal controversy, colonial officials campaigned to change relevant provisions of the Civil Code applicable in the colonies.
