From communicative memory to cultural memory. The past in the testimonies of Arezzo and Siena (1177-1180). Using an extraordinarily informative source, the transcripts of oral testimonies presented to a pontifical enquiry from 1177-1180, about a conflict between the dioceses of Siena and Arezzo in the 1120s, the way in which witnesses recalled past events is analysed as a social phenomenon (communicative memory). The testimonies show that how and what is remembered differs according to social "milieu" (collective memory); they also show how traditions can develop and, in the long term, becom.e an integral part of fixed ideas about historical beliefs and even of history itself (cultural memory).
